Sometimes in life an opportunity presents itself and seems too good to not take advantage, and so it was in 2011 when myself and my colleague, Jeff Kidner, took the chance of redundancy from Burton’s Biscuits.

Having spent more than a decade as part of the senior team responsible for process improvement, we struck out on our own.  Initially using the Training Within Industry programme developed in the United States during the second world war – a unique set of modules which I’d used extensively and seen the effectiveness of at Burton’s, TWI Lean Solutions was formed and made immediate inroads.

We established a clear vision of providing specific value for organisations, not just by going in and implementing a change, but by actively training their workforces. This is achieved through detailed process standardisation, integration of continuous improvement techniques into all aspects of the organisation, demonstrating and enhancing customer value and putting robust plans in place, so as to ensure sustainability once the projects are complete.

I became a certified trainer in 2013, adding the specialist teaching skills to my existing lean knowledge and experience, and helping to win contracts with BMW and key members within the Ministry of Defence’s supply chain, amongst others. My passion to combine process improvement and business added value with the learning elements to help develop employees, ensured long and successful relationships with a number of organisations.

With TWI Lean Solutions’ track record now established, in 2015 we were approached to become authorised Yellow Belt Six Sigma training providers, with the Green Belt accreditation following shortly afterwards. Extensive practical training projects with the NHS in Nottingham and the fast-growing Cardiff-based financial provider, MotoNovo Finance, presented new opportunities, taking the typically manufacturing-based programmes into hospitals, clinics and offices.

TWI Lean Solutions today:

Since 2016, all of the ramifications surrounding Brexit required focus across all types of industries, whilst COVID-19 is now providing global challenges like no other in a generation. This means organisations have a requirement to ensure processes are as customer-focused and efficient as possible, adding value to both the company and its customers, has never been greater and the demand for Lean training is higher than ever.

Given the current situation, on-site learning is unlikely to be possible in many circumstances, but at TWI, in the same way we help our clients, we’re continually looking at ways to improve our processes.

We now offer training workshops online!

Using the Yellow Belt as an introduction to Lean Techniques, this can now be delivered in an online environment, using video sharing software and specifically designed exercises, ensuring the complete education for all staff is undiminished.

Staff can either do the training at home or in their usual office environment, and a full certificate of accreditation is provided to all attendees.
